Suggested Itinerary for a Long Summer’s Day

Summer season has arrived in New York, bringing long days of frequent heat and stupor.

At the Roof Garden of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a green canopy over Central Park provides an illusion of cool in New York's summer heat.

The days are so long that rest time is required to break up the day, like nap time in kindergarten.

The modern atrium of the renovated NYPL branch library on W. 53rd St., across the street from MoMA, features quiet places to sit and read while viewing tranquil images of New York.

Summer readers can find their own nooks in public spaces or in air-conditioned rooms of the public library.

Bryant Park, just west of the main branch of the New York Public Library, is a popular spot for a variety of activities - ping-pong, reading, drinking, eating, and napping.

While the heat conspires to take the intellect down a notch, just being near a library seems like a smart strategy.

At Bryant Park, readers can glance up from their book to take in sights of the Radiator Building and the Empire State Building, among other architectural landmarks.

Brisk and determined walks may be necessary for the cooler seasons, but summer is about looking for places to sit or linger.

The Reading Room at Bryant Park includes browsing shelves for popular books, children's literature, and the classics.

Sometimes air-conditioning is required, with views of sky and water.

The Winter Garden of the World Financial Center (Brookfield Place) currently features The Roof, a site-specific artwork by Thai artist Pinaree Sanpitak.

New Yorkers are lucky to have such great rooms for their summer reading.

Along the Battery Esplanade, benches provide good reading spaces for seagoing adventure tales.

Slow strolls are also in order, preferably near the water.

The pavilion at Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park includes seating on the top tier.

The places shown here - The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the 53rd Street Library, Bryant Park, the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center, the Battery Park Esplanade, and stops along the Battery - would make an excellent day’s outing. Go see the museum in the morning, visit the libraries and Bryant Park in the afternoon, and stroll the Battery late in the day.

From Battery Park, views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and New York Harbor.

The enclosed map suggests the details from getting here to there. Almost all of these venues have public facilities, and many of them (The Met Roof, Bryant Park, Brookfield Place, Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park) offer nearby food and drinks for purchase.

As the summer days are long, there’s no need to rush. You may even have time for a nap.
